SAILING!!!!

"Watch Your Head"

My friend Karl kept yelling  "watch your head" as I headed out on my maiden voyage in my Sunfish.

You read that right - I finally sailed!

Karl, who use to sail with his dad,  helped me rig it, put the mast up and launch her. We had to bend the rudder holder on the transom so the rudder would fit and off I went. I'm sure the rudder holder has an actual name but I don't know it.

I went back and forth in the bay where my parents live, getting a feel for the wind when I had any, using the rudder, ducking under the boom and switching side of the boat (without tumping it even!) All the while Karl laughing at me, telling me I sounded like a little kid in my excitement and yelling at me to watch my head.

I saw a momma and her baby manatee right by the dock and out in the middle of the bay, tarpon the size of my Sunfish rolling at the top of the water.

I loved it! I knew I would.

I have a lot to learn and getting out in the river or the gulf is a ways off, but I'm excited about sailing. I have to buy all new lines and maybe put a seal on the bottom of my boat - it has sat for a long time unused - the two years I've owned it and years before sitting in its previous owner's yard.
Now my question is - do you name a Sunfish or is it just your sunfish?

P.S. This food elimination situation is a real pain. Just in case you thought I was over it. Haha

Catching Up

The Picture Wall and More

I have been struggling to write an update - busy with work and friends (yay for having those though work is a huge source of stress these days),; anxious about money (in a nutshell - the refi is a bust - we'll try again in January and hope for higher appraisal; I sued J for the loan he owes me but he has run away from his problems so I'll have to hunt him down for it; I guess I'm going to have to keep working a second job);  love and life - happy happy happy but freaking out a bit about possible changes and definite ones - best friends here are moving north - way north; my health (the never-ending fun of asthma and SIBO); my out-of-shapeness (see previous); the election - aren't we all stressed out about our country's future?  I wonder if doctors are handing out more anti-anxiety meds in this presidential year?

I kind of want to crawl under the covers for about a week or seven. But I won't - I can't. I'll just keep running (though I'm very bad at it these days - more of a run/walker - seriously?!). And I'll keep getting myself to yoga - beach and otherwise. And I'll keep smiling.

And now on with the blog! What am I writing about again? Oh yes, healing my home, my heart and my sailboats!

*Home projects

I mostly finished the picture wall - except for some pictures I want to hang up high and can't reach. It makes me happy as I walk up and down my stairs. Jennie in Boston and my sister Heather in Tennessee were inspiring and encouraging. Good peeps and good memories on this wall.

*Sailboats

I moved my Sunfish from Capt. David's home (thank you David and lovely family) onto an unused jet ski lift at my parents' house (thanks Mom and Dad) and put her in the water to see if she was seaworthy. She is mostly - there was some moisture in the cockpit after my test run. I bought some Flex Seal (Karl recommended) that I still need to spray on to waterproof her. I say I moved her but really it was Karl and Brendan. I supervised (I'm sure you suspected as much).

Still need to rig the Sunfish and actually learn to sail (haven't I been saying this for a while?). I did watch a great video on rigging a Sunfish
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zspatJufR5I - This teenage girl is amazing!

Brendan was taking pics in case I fell in!

Just paddling my sailboat.

My still-not-sanded wooden sailboat remains at Riverside Club until all boats have to be moved from the parking lot for tourist season. Where I'll put her after that - I don't know - but I hope I can keep her close so I can actually work on her.
Looking futuristic - but really the peeling 1971 Enterprise Dinghy is under here!

*Life, my heart

B is out of town again and I miss him.

Jess, Chris, Max, Finley, Paul and Annie are moving North - and soon! I'm really down about it. They're my Marco family.
Chris is selling the marina where I work in weekends - my fishing, beer drinking, Packers watching family.

*Other good things
Happy little sea horse from Oscar

Visit from besty Bevie Lou

If you're going to run/walk a 5K because you can't breathe, good to have Bev there to tell you you might not die and to get you beer and make you smile.

Oh The Messes You'll Make

TRYING TO SORE TO HIGH HEIGHTS

I'm making messes as I go to those places I'll go. Dr. Seuss knew I would. "The bang up and hang ups can happen to you," he wrote in "Oh The Places You'll Go."

Well banged up and hanged up I have been. But I'm finding my way and climbing my mountain - or one of them.

This week I have been battling my brain (Brendan has been out of town since Aug. 9 and I have been sad - I miss him. Jess is out of town too, and other friends are busy busy. :( And I'm pondering my place in this world); my inability to run (started P.T. for the strained calf and should be able to run and play hockey in a couple of weeks); and getting some things done - ya know all your basic daily-life first-world ups and downs.

What have I gotten done? Well, first I visited my sunfish and made a plan to put her in the water tomorrow.

Here she is, almost a year later still in Capt. David's garage (thank you David!) I think she needs a name.
As my friend Karl (who lives across the street from David) mocked me for not having found the time to get back to this boat or my wooden sailboat sitting in a parking lot, I caulked a few spots on my sunfish. I just wrote that like I caulk everyday - I watched four YouTube videos before I did this - ha. I drank the beer Karl brought me and we decided since I wasn't trying to make her pretty yet, possibly ever,  I should probably just put her in the water and learn how to sail her - if she floats.

So I have a plan, Saturday after I get off work from the marina, Karl and I are going to take her to a little beach nearby (this is not something I can do myself - I don't think she'll fit in Minke the Mini Cooper) and I'm going to start here - https://www.sunfishclass.org/documents/learn_2_sail_in_3_days.pdf

I suspect Karl will sit on the sand and laugh at me. That's ok, I'm sure I'm going to laugh at me too. Then the plan is to take the boat to my parents' house and see if she will fit on the jet ski lift. It's much lighter than a jet ski - I think it can work.

Stay tuned ...

Second accomplishment this week: I tackled another electrical project. This time I didn't have to be talked through it on the phone, though there was some text consultations.

The light in the main bath stopped working months ago - it flickers and produces about 1/16 of the light it is supposed to. At first, I stopped using that bathroom - the one with the good shower - in the dark and then I put a table lamp in there so I can still shower in the mornings.

Two nights ago, I decided it was time to see if the switch wiring was the problem - though now that I really think about it, I'm not sure why it would be. But this also would further my goal to change out all white outlets and switches to black with nickel covers.

Up to this point, I had only changed out two switches that were dimmers when they were supposed to be switches and J had already tackled the hard part of those. This time, I was going to change the receptacle too (you know, the outlets) and change it to a GFCI receptacle so it will switch off if water gets near it.

It started like this after I turned the power off:

Sometimes it felt like I might as well be reading this upside down

I studied the existing switch and receptacle and how they were attached vs the wiring book and the new switch and receptacle.  I text my question to Karl: only one of these has a ground wire- is that ok? Um, no. I was going to need a pigtail ground wire for one of these. I remembered I had done something similar in the downstairs bathroom, I took a new dimmer switch that had wires (why don't they all come with wires attached?!) and I clipped off the green ground wire and tied it to the bare copper wire (the ground) to then attached it to my new switch.

The old mess

Stolen wire

Pigtail

Ok, with wires attached and double checked with the wiring book, it was time to test my handywork. I put the switch and the receptacle back in the wall and attached the screws and went downstairs to flip the breaker. But first, I thought, perhaps I should take the fire extinguisher upstairs - since I'm alone doing this. I grabbed the extinguisher from beside the stove and took it upstairs while reading the instructions. And then I laughed.

Yep, that's the store tag that keeps you from trying out the merchandise first.
I cut off the tag and went downstairs and flipped the breaker. Success! Well kind of. The switch and the outlet had power and worked but it didn't solve my flickering light problem - the bulbs are built into the light so they can't be replaced. I'll have to replace the light. Grrrr. But that will have to be another story. As Scarlett said "Tomorrow is another day."

Next was the bigger battle - positioning these guys so I could put on the cover. It doesn't sound difficult but I fought this for an hour before giving up, ordering dinner then tackling my cable box, Comcast and the remote for another hour ( I clearly like torture).
Here I am contorted in the sink trying to attach this cover.

I spent an hour in this sink.

I returned to the bathroom outlet battle yesterday after visiting my friend Oscar for coffee. He told me to use a flat head screwdriver to move things around under the cover until they fit. Brilliant! Took me like five minutes! Yay Oscar!

This is the light that goes on, when the outlet switches off!

Yes, so I have still have to use the table lamp. Don't judge me.

And this is how I felt:

Like I had moved mountains. As Dr. Seuss said I would.

And Jeri, I still have the copy you gave me many years ago. Thank you, my dearest friend.

Check out "Oh The Places You'll Go" on audiobook and YouTube - John Lithgow narrates - I mean how fantastic is that? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NGNdWNnFSxE

Daydreaming

Never Let Your Fear Decide You Fate

I sat and stared at my Sunfish last night, daydreaming about sailing her and contemplating her needs: a new rub rail, bow handle, a good cleaning and a dolly before I can even think of putting her in the water.

Jess said at I least I can look at an overwhelming project and make a to-do-list and go forward with it. True, I can. I'm slowly getting through the lists in my home - though the lists continue to multiply.

I should make a similar list for myself before I get back into the proverbial water. In my mind, I feel like I need to at least have a fully healed heart and mostly healed and functioning condo before I really put myself out there.

My friends disagree.

On the condo perhaps rightfully so - who knows when it will be finished. It's currently in a state of decoration and cleaning by hobo. It is going to take the right person to know me and realize I don't want to  live like a vagabond or maybe I'm putting too much weight on the situation or maybe it's a good excuse for me.

"Never let your fear decide your fate." A great line from Awolnation's song Kill Your Heroes. It resonated with me Sunday morning when I was running.

Well, I met an old man
Dying on a train.
No more destination,
No more pain.
Well, he said
"
One thing before I graduate
Never let your fear decide your fate."

I say ya kill your heroes and
Fly, fly, baby don't cry.
No need to worry cause
Everybody will die.

We're all the same - we all have flaws. I don't need to be perfect and neither does anything in my life to be able to open up to others and enjoy life. To love and be loved.

Now I just need to live this.

Fly, Fly.
